John Carter Martin, Death Bogart GA, Obituary

A quiet stretch of road in Oconee County has become the center of a heartbreaking story — one of loss, survival, and a family forever changed.

It happened Sunday night along Atlanta Highway, where a disabled vehicle had come to a stop. John Carter Martin, of Monroe, pulled over to help his grandson — a simple act of kindness that would turn tragic.

Moments later, authorities say an ambulance from Northeast Georgia Medical Center struck the scene, sending vehicles off the road and pinning both men. Martin did not survive.

His grandson, 17-year-old Conner Lee Schoon, a junior at Winder-Barrow High School, was critically injured. He was rushed from Piedmont Athens Regional Medical Center to Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta at Arthur M. Blank Hospital, where he underwent emergency surgery for internal injuries.

Now stable, Conner is recovering — but his healing goes beyond the physical. His family says he remembers the crash and the moment his grandfather was struck, and has had to face the painful reality of that loss.

As the community rallies around them, the Georgia State Patrol continues to investigate what led to the crash, with charges still pending.

For now, the family is asking for prayers as they navigate grief, recovery, and the difficult road ahead.

The family will release obituary, memorial, funeral, and visitation details at a later time. Until then, some information remains subject to confirmation, and this report may be updated as additional details emerge.
