Tom Kostyra Obituary, Death Tahiti, Polynesia Accident

A Tribute to Tom Kostyra: A Rising Star Lost Too Soon

It is with profound sorrow that we mourn the untimely passing of Tom Kostyra, a young and vibrant member of the surfing community whose life was tragically cut short in a traffic accident on Saturday night in Papeete, Tahiti. Tom, at just 23 years old, was a member of the prestigious Pole Hopes Surf program of the Ligue de Bretagne de Surf—a program that nurtured his talent, dedication, and passion for the ocean. The news of his death reverberated through the hearts of all who knew him, leaving a profound void in the world of surfing.

Tom’s journey was nothing short of inspiring. Growing up in the paradise of Tahiti, he was first introduced to the ocean at a young age. It was here, in the crystalline waves of the Pacific, that he found his true calling. Surfing wasn’t just a sport for Tom; it was a deep connection to the water, the sky, and the rhythm of nature itself. His early years were spent honing his craft under the mentorship of Julien Miremont, a former professional bodyboarder who turned coach, guiding Tom through the nuances of surfing with an unwavering belief in his potential.

However, as is often the case with those destined for greatness, Tom’s journey was marked by both passion and sacrifice. At the age of 14, he made the difficult decision to leave his home in Tahiti and relocate to Strasbourg, France, to pursue his education. This move temporarily distanced him from the surfboard, but it was only a pause—a momentary step back before the inevitable return to the sport that had captured his soul.

It didn’t take long for the call of the ocean to pull him back, stronger than ever. Supported by his family, Tom made the bold decision to follow his heart and immerse himself fully in the world of competitive surfing. He joined the Breton system through the Pole Espoirs, a turning point that marked the beginning of his serious commitment to the sport. His talent, resilience, and work ethic soon became apparent, allowing him to rise through the ranks of French surfing, training at renowned surf clubs such as the Hossegor Surf Club, ESB Surf Club, Lacanau Surf Club, and Santocha Surf Club. His success in regional and national competitions, along with participation in select QS circuit events, was a testament to his drive and skill.

But perhaps what endeared Tom to his peers most was not just his surfing prowess but his character. A young man with an infectious smile, a humble spirit, and a natural ability to uplift those around him, Tom’s kindness and good humor were as much a part of his legacy as his athletic achievements. Whether on the waves or off them, he was always the first to lend a hand, share a laugh, and inspire others with his unwavering positive energy.

Two years ago, Tom made the bold decision to return to Tahiti and pursue his dream of becoming a surf instructor. This move wasn’t just about teaching others how to surf—it was about sharing his love for the ocean and passing on the lessons he had learned over the years. His work as an instructor allowed him to forge meaningful connections with his students, guiding them not only in the sport but in appreciating the deeper spiritual connection to the ocean that Tom had always valued so deeply.

Tom’s passing leaves an irreplaceable void in the surfing community. As we reflect on his life, we remember a young man whose heart was as boundless as the waves he rode. His journey was one of passion, dedication, and kindness—a journey that was tragically cut short, but whose impact will resonate for years to come.

On behalf of the Fédération Française de Surf, we extend our deepest condolences to Tom’s family, friends, and all who had the privilege of knowing him. Our thoughts are also with the entire surfing community, particularly the alumni of the Pôle Espoirs, who knew Tom as a bright and promising athlete, as well as a cherished friend.

Tom, you will be deeply missed, but your spirit will forever live on in the waves, the hearts of those who knew you, and the legacy you leave behind in the world of surfing.
